Electronic Instruments

Electronic InstrumentsWhen I was younger the type of electronic instruments that you could buy were really limited. The focus was on live music, live musicians and playing in smoky clubs and pubs. These days with the amazing technology available there are so many options when it comes to electronic instruments that when I was looking to purchase some equipment for a musical score that I wanted to write I had to think long and hard about what I wanted to achieve and what I really needed to create it.

This is what I found when I was looking at electronic instruments:

Types of electronic instruments

1. Voice virtual analogue synthesizers – I got caught up playing with these electronic instruments in the store they are a hybrid between analogue and digital synthesizers that create a whole different sound which is fun funky with a sharp edge. The one that I was fascinated by had full size keys, which is unusual for electronic instruments that are so compact. Lots of presets to play with and a USB port that meant an interface with some fun programs;

2. Drum machines – these electronic instruments are perfect for someone like me who doesn’t have the coordination nor the patience to learn how to play drums. Lets face it drumming is an amazing skill that I will never have so a drum machine means that I can add some awesome beats to any piece that I compose;

3. Portable keyboards – now these have been around for a few years but they have evolved more than probably any other type of electronic instruments. From the basics where you had a few fun presets that would play greensleeves and a few other songs to now when some are so powerful that they can create a whole orchestra and conduct it as well;

4. Acoustic tone generators – this is one of the electronic instruments that you add to the rack that any serious or semi-serious musician will have these days. With recording at home being such and affordable and easy option why not pick up a few electronic instruments that are purely effects that will enhance your piece of art when you record it;

5. Sustain pedal – any portable keyboard will have a sustain pedal to elongate the sounds to create variety in the music. You can buy a universal sustain pedal or one that is especially made for your keyboard;

6. Electronic wind controller – this was one of those electronic instruments that I have never ever heard of before. It has a USB plug-in and is a synthesized wind instrument that replicates the Oboe, Saxophone, flute and brass instruments. It plugs directly into your pc and you play just like you would a wind instrument and some even have a dishwasher safe removable mouthpiece for hygiene. There is also a different type that does the same thing which is a digital horn which however is not one of the electronic instruments that will plug into the pc and is usually battery powered – but a lot of fun;

7. Digital recorder – you may not have a computer up to the job so you may want to add a digital recorder to your collection of electronic instruments. These vary depending on your budget and the age. Some have been around for a while and have some really cool features while the newer types have an array of special features that will enhance any piece of music;

8. International electronic instruments – I found a number of electronic instruments that replicate some of the really interesting sounds of the Tabla, Tanpura, or Sitar. This is just a few of the range available and are a great addition to a synth that may be a bit challenged for authentic international sounds;

9. A crybaby – this is a rack mount WAH and another of the electronic instruments that you can add to the rack that I am sure you are building. Some of them have 6 frequencies and up to 4 WAH pedals that will add that special something to your guitar sounds. Jimi Hendrix never had something this good for his sounds;

10. Microphones – if you want a good sound especially for your vocals then you must have a great microphone. There is no point in everything else sounding fantastic and the vocals coming out muffled and fuzzy this is one of the very important electronic instruments that you need for your collection. It is worth spending a lot of time choosing the perfect microphone for your requirements, as there are many different kinds that specialize in different types of sounds. Some pick up sound from only one direction and others are Omni directional. Try before you buy is wise and you can hear for yourself its inbuilt capabilities.

Well that’s my list of electronic instruments for now but the list is exhaustive and you can find anything that you want out there either online (where I do most of my shopping because I love a bargain) or at stores that carry electronic instruments and the accessories that you need to operate or enhance them.

I am off to make lots of music now I have a range of electronic instruments to help me with some amazing and funky sounds. I can be as creative as I like without leaving the comfort of my home thanks to my electronic instruments and without expensive studio and session fees that I cant afford. Happy creating!
